Awards and Distinctions

  • Prof. Dr. Shirley Knauer, Centre for Medical Biotechnology, UDE, was honoured with the German Life Science Award 2013.
  • Prof. Michael Ehrmann, ZMB Microbiology, was appointed as Professorial Research Fellow, School of Biosciences, Cardiff University, UK, in 2013 and as a member of the American Academy of Microbiology.
  • Dr. Susanne Horn received the Fleur-Hiege Memorial Prize 2013 of the Fleur-Hiege-Stiftung gegen Hautkrebs.
  • Dr. Bastian Schilling, Institute for Dermatology, received the Clinical Science Award 2013 of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Immun- und Targeted Therapie e. V. and a research grant from the Deutsche Stiftung für Dermatologie 2013 in the category of translational research in dermato-therapy.
  • PD Dr. Dominik Heider (ZMB Bioinformatics) was awarded the Gottschalk-Dietrich-Baedeker Prize. The machine-learning methods for solving biomedical problems developed by Dr. Heider are considered ground-breaking for the area of molecular and imaging diagnostics.
  • Lars C. Michel (Haematology) received the Young Investigator Award of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hämatologie und Medi­zi­ni­sche Onkologie in 2013.
  • Prof. Joachim R. Göthert (Haematology) ­received the Leukemia Diploma of Excellency Award 2013 and the Medizinpreis der Stiftung Universitätsmedizin Essen 2013.
  • Dr. Cyrus Khandanpour (Haematology) received the Clinical Research Award of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hämatologie und Medizinische Onkologie in 2013.
  • Prof. Wiebke Hansen was honoured with the Journal of Immunology Young Investigator Award at the 15th International Congress of Immunology, Milan 2013.
  • Prof. Johannes H. Schulte, Paedriatric ­Oncology, Essen University Hospital, was ­honoured with the Kind-Philipp Award
  • 2012 of the Society of Paediatric Oncology and Haematology.
  • Prof. Peter Horn, Director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine at the University Hospital, was honoured with the prestigious Jean Julliard Award.
  • The “Radiation Sciences” Research Training Group and its coordinator Prof. Verena ­Jendrossek was appointed in 2012 to nominate a Scientist in Residence: Professor Alan ­Ashworth, Chief Executive of the Institute of Cancer Research, London, was honoured for his ground-breaking contributions to cancer research.
  • Prof. Stephan Barcikowski was nominated for the Berthold Leibinger Innovation Award 2012.
  • Dr. Jaroslaw Szczyrba (Institute for Anatomy) received the Dr. Eduard-Martin Prize (best young scientist of the University of Saarland, 2012).
  • Prof. Ralf Küppers was appointed “Lymphoma” Section Editor of Leukemia journal.
  • Prof. Stephan Barcikowski has been ap­pointed Editor-in-Chief of BioNanoMaterials journal.
  • Nina Million (Prof. S. Barcikowski’s research group) received the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Biomaterialien e.V. (DGBM) award for the best final thesis in 2013.
  • Finja Jockenhöfer (Dermatology) won the Lecture Award of the German Society of ­Phlebology for her presentation of original scientific data during the 2013 Annual ­Convention.
  • Dr. Maren Stoffels-Weindorf was awardedthe top prize for medicine of the “Drei-Länder-Wundpreis” 2012.
