Faculty of Mathematics

Mathematics in 2016 still builds up on the impetus from other research disciplines on one hand and on its intrinsic urge for the precise understanding of abstract structures and connections on the other. This discrepancy is characteristic of mathematical research where knowledge gain is hardly plannable and often happens unexpectedly. Cooperative projects with neighbouring fields and universities are of great importance for mathematicians. With its 29 research groups, our Faculty of Mathematics is one of the largest in Germany.  Its thematic scope means that it can contribute to the forefront of current research developments in a number of fields.
