Future Prospects

When the Faculty was first founded as part of the former Comprehensive University of Duisburg, it still had a very strong practical orientation. Over the past 40 years, it has evolved to become a research-active institution. In addition to the collaborations and projects with practitioners that are a natural part of an applied discipline, excellent publications and highly competitive externally funded research are among the MSM’s current research goals. In terms of how it has developed and its size, the MSM has achieved outstanding results in research rankings in recent years – a trend it intends to consolidate in future.

Within the MSM, Operations Research/Logistics has developed in the recent past into a further focus of research alongside Account-ing/Finance, Economics, and East Asian Economics. Central to this area of interest are the Chairs of Prof. Alf Kimms, Prof. Jochen Gönsch and Prof. Michael Manitz and, in the wider context, those of Prof. Torsten J. Gerpott and Prof. Peter Chamoni. Operations Research/Logistics is also part of one of the UDE’s main research areas, “Urban Systems”. The MSM aims to develop this particular area and in the medium term establish another strong research focus for the future.
