Genetic Medicine at University Hospital Essen

The strengthening and further networking of the key research area of genetic medicine and medical biotechnology is the declared aim of all participants. With this concept, which is supplemented and reinforced by the associated MedBio academic programme, the research groups are making a significant contribution to the integration of medicine, the natural sciences and engineering at the UDE. The rapid transfer of the latest research results to practical applications, in particular, is a central concern. The construction of a new research building at University Hospital intended primarily for translational research is a further step toward this goal.

A research training group (Graduiertenkolleg) “Transcription Control, Chromatin Structure and DNA Repair during Development and Differentiation” has been established at the ZMB, and a second may well follow next year. A first application has been submitted for a SFB (collaborative research centre) on “Communication and Signal Perception in Tumours” involving 20 research groups (Speaker: Prof. Erich Gulbins, Institute for Molecular Biology). A further expansion of the ZMB is desired by its members to create a thematic focus which could prove itself in an excellence initiative in the future.
