Essen University Hospital and its 31 departments and 22 institutes not only form the frame for maximum medical care, as a university facility they are also home to the Faculty of Medicine, which is especially committed to research and teaching.
While the research activities are highly diversified, the core areas of Cardiovascular ­Medicine, Oncology and Transplantation have developed over the years, with more recent additions being Genetic Medicine and Immunology and Infectiology.
Research is conducted here in basic to translational and clinical fields, and with great success: although the Faculty of Medicine is relatively small, measured by the quality and quantity of scientific publications per capita, Essen has the highest research output of all university medical centres in North Rhine-Westphalia.
