Engineering

The research groups of the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering collaborate with a large number of industrial and academic partners in Germany and worldwide. For this reason, it is only possible to present a small selection of external collaborations here. Alongside these, collaboration with other departmental chairs and institutes within the faculty and the UDE as well as with affiliated institutes is an inherent part of the department’s work.
The Chair of Environmental Process Engineering and Plant Design collaborates on projects of industrial relevance with major companies such as e.on, RWE, Evonik, Steag, Krupp Polysius AG and Hitachi Power Europe, as well as with important universities and research centres such as the University of Stuttgart, TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University Bochum and the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT. The Chair of Materials Science and Engineering is similarly working with several partners from science and industry on ongoing research projects. Its partners include: Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM, TU Kaiserslautern, TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University Bochum, Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, University of California Los Angeles, Rush University Chicago, Northwestern University, and several companies.
Working with business and engineering scientists, the Chair of Business Administration and International Automotive Management investigates the development of the automotive industry in NRW and the EU on the transition to electric mobility. This research is part of Ziel2.NRW, model region and EU projects. For the “In-East School of Advanced Regional Studies” funded by the BMBF, the chair collaborates with business and social scientists. The Institute of Ship Technology, Ocean Engineering and Transport Systems has an international collaboration with the Escola Politecnica of the Universidade de Sao Paulo in Brazil. Professor Bin Zi from the China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT) visited the Chair of Mechanics and Robotics from December 2010 to December 2012 as guest professor. Teaching and research at the same chair have also benefited from the presence of the Humboldt scholars Professor Huafeng Ding and Dr. Haitao Liu (CUMT) since 2010 and 2012 respectively. The “First International Conference on Cable-Driven Parallel Robots” in September 2012, co-organized by the Chair of Mechatronics, was the first event of its kind. The next instalment is planned at the UDE for 2014. As part of an international research programme of the DAAD, Professor Sharum (UKM Malaysia) has been conducting research here since mid-2012.
