Outlook

At the end of 2016, the DFG decided to establish the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB)/Transregio “MARIE – Mobile Material Characterization and Localization by Electromagnetic Sensing”. This has now resulted in a research perspective of 12 years for the five Chairs of the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology department involved. In addition to UDE scientists, experts from the Ruhr University Bochum, the Bergische University in Wuppertal, TU Darmstadt and the Fraunhofer Institutes — IMS in Duisburg and FHR in Wachtberg — are also involved.

The concentration of expertise envisaged in the Centre for Semiconductor Technology and Optoelectronics (ZHO) is intended to provide fresh impetus. The collaborative research activities  range from the materials, to epitaxial growth and lithographic processing to the manufacture of building elements and subsystems for ultra-high-frequency electronics and photonics.

Following the successful launch of the accredited Medical Technology bachelor's degree, the corresponding master’s degree will now be added to the curriculum for the winter semester 2017/2018. In order to strengthen the priority area of medical technology, a new professorship for “Integrated Micro and Nano Systems for Medical Technology” is currently being established in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems in Duisburg. This professorship will take on group leadership of a new IMS department that has to be established, and will intensify collaboration in research and teaching with the EIT department.
