Institute of East Asian Studies

Research at IN-EAST – Meeting East Asia’s Growing Geopolitical Impact

IN-EAST undertakes discipline-based area studies by applying political, economic and sociological theories and research perspectives to East Asia and its constituent countries and combines these approaches in cross-cutting interdisciplinary projects. The aim is to contribute to the understanding of developments in the modern societies of East Asia, their international relations and their growing impact in the world. The Institute cooperates with partners across the UDE, linking social sciences, economics, and humanities as well as the technical and natural sciences in its research projects.

Particular importance is attached at IN-EAST to ensuring that research and teaching are closely connected. This principle is applied in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes offered by the Institute and with great commitment in its two structured postdoctoral and PhD programmes.
