The analytical perspective of gender research reveals the gender order underlying our society and leads to a differentiated understanding of biological phenomena and societal contexts and their backgrounds. The research contributions of the members of the Essen College of Gender Research (EKfG) impressively depict how multi-faceted and in which different ways biological sex and socially constructed, and thus essentially changeable, gender (can) (inter)act.

Since its foundation in 1997, the EKfG has evolved into a nationally visible and widely recognized institution with innovative scientific potential and an essential component of the University, as a partner to the faculties and a point of contact and interaction for scientists and students active in the field of gender research. The very good results achieved by the College in its regular institutional evaluation in 2015 underpin both its fundamental and strategic orientation.
