  • In 2011 IUTA e.V. was designated the first “Place of Progress” in NRW by the NRW Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research.
  • Researchers from Nano Structures and Technology and Thermal Process Engineering received the 2012 InnoMateria-Award together with IUTA e. V. and the Research and Training Center for Welding Technology for the first nanosilicon-based thermoelectric generator.
  • The 2011 Innovation Award in Engineering Sciences by the Sparkasse am Niederrhein was awarded to Rik Braun (Process Engineering and Water Science) for his Master’s thesis “Application of powdered activated carbon in membrane filtration – investigation of different carbon dosages”.
  • Juliane Bräcker (Process Engineering and ­Water Science) was awarded the 2011 DVGW Study Award for her Master’s thesis on the ­development of an online analysis tool for rapid detection of microorganisms from aqueous matrices.
  • Professor Andrés Kecskeméthy (Mechanics and Robotics) was appointed corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna and speaker of the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science.
  • For his doctoral dissertation on “Efficient development of a human-focused lane keeping ­assistance system with a driving simulator”, Dr. Gregor Hiesgen (Mechatronics) was awarded the 2012 Innovation Award by the Sparkasse am Niederrhein as well as the Award of the Sparkasse Duisburg.
  • Philip Mucha (Institute of Ship Technology, Ocean Engineering and Transport Systems, ISMT) was awarded second prize for his Bachelor’s thesis in 2011 and first prize for his Master’s thesis in 2012 by the Expert Commission
  • on Education and Training of the Schiffbau­technische Gesellschaft e. V. (STG, German Society for Maritime Technology).
  • Sven-Brian Müller (ISMT) was awarded the Georg-Weinblum Award of the STG in 2011.
  • Jan Peckolt (ISMT) was awarded the RWE Future Prize for his diploma thesis in 2011. It was on the basis of the wave power plant he developed that science location Duisburg was designated a “Selected Landmark 2012” under a joint ­initiative of the Federal government and industry.
  • A business plan developed by Jan Peckolt (ISMT) for the implementation of a wave energy system received the Duisburg GRIID Founder’s Prize.
