The Department of Computer and Cognitive Sciences will benefit this year from the addition of a professorship in Language Technology. For mobile devices in particular, language is an important data carrier, but it is also of vital importance for understanding and automatic analysis of text. The new professorship will therefore help to sustain the focus on Interactive Systems and Media.
The Faculty is also expanding the Center for Computational Sciences and Simulation (CCSS) with the appointment of Professor Jens Krüger to High-Performance Computing. Further expansion of the Cray XT6m supercomputer is also scheduled in this context. In addition to the more traditional computers, GPU-based systems, which permit very efficient computing on graphics cards, are also increasingly being used as a cost-effective alternative to CPU-based high-performance computing. The inclusion of the CCSS opens up new opportunities for collaboration within the Faculty of Engineering.
