IUTA is a process engineering research institute working in the field of energy and environmental technology. It was set up in 1989 at a time of structural transformation in the region and is located in the buildings of the former Krupp test facility in Duisburg-Rheinhausen. The Institute has close ties with the University of Duisburg-Essen, since 1991 as an affiliated institute. It is one of the founding members of the Johannes-Rau-Forschungsgemeinschaft research association.

The Institute has around 130 members working primarily on applied R&D projects in collaboration with partners in industry. Basic research projects with universities and non-university research institutions are undertaken to support the applied work. The Institute sets out to transfer new scientific knowledge and methods into industrial processes, techniques and products as well as to find scientific solutions to industrial problems. IUTA has an annual turnover of 8 – 10 million euros.
