Awards and Distinctions

  • In 2015 Prof. Dirk Schadendorf (UK Essen/ZMB), director of the Clinic for Dermatology and the West German Cancer Centre (WTZ), was awarded the Wilhelm-Warner Prize 2014 by the foundation of the same name “…in recognition of his pioneering contributions to experimental research and the therapy of melanoma….”
  • Dr. Veronica Krenn, MPI for Molecular Physiology Dortmund, AG Prof. Andrea Musacchio (ZMB), was awarded the Otto-Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society in 2015.
  • Hannah Kohler (UK Essen), Clinic for Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, was awarded the “Medizinpreis 2015” in the “Research – Early career support” category in recognition of her contribution to the molecular characterization of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. 
  • Prof. Erich Gulbins (UK Essen/ZMB), Institute for Molecular Biology (Cancer Research), received the “Eva and Klaus Grohe Award on Infectious Biology 2015” of the BBAW (Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities).
  • Dr. Elisabeth Livingstone, UK Essen, Clinic for Dermatology, won the Science Award of the German Medical Women’s Association 2015.
  • Dr. Regina Wobben, UK Essen, Institute for Physiology, received the Science Award of the Sparkasse Essen 2015.
  • PD Dr. Diana Klein and Julia Hess, UK Essen, Institute for Cell Biology, were presented with the Young Investigator Award of the Gesellschaft für biologische Strahlenforschung (GBS, Society for Biological Radiation Research) at its annual conference in 2015.
  • Dr. Wiebke Sondermann and Prof. Joachim Dissemond, UK Essen, Clinic for Dermatology, were awarded the “Deutscher Wundpreis 2015” of the German Wound Congress (DeWu). 
  • Richard Voigtländer, UK Essen, Clinic for Endocrinology, was awarded the prize of the Applied Endocrinology Section of the German Society of Endocrinology (DGE) in 2015 for the best case report on endocrine tumours.
  • In 2014 Prof. Alexander Roesch, UK Essen, Clinic for Dermatology, was awarded the 2013 Prize of the Fritz-Acker Foundation in recognition of his scientific contributions to the pathology of malignant melanoma.
  • Dr. A. Görgens, UK Essen, Institute for Transfusion Medicine, was awarded the Fritz-Schiff Prize in 2014 by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Transfusionsmedizin und Immunhämatologie (DGTI).
  • PD Dr. Joachim Klode and Prof. Dr. Joachim Dissemond, UK Essen, Clinic for Dermatology, were awarded the “Deutscher Wundpreis” in 2014.
  • Prof. Erich Gulbins was honoured with the Annika Liese Award on Major Depression 2014.

Further Distinctions

  • Prof. Ralf Küppers was appointed associate editor of the scientific journal Leukemia in 2015.
  • In support of his research on the anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, Dr. Lars Möller, UK Essen, Clinic for Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, was awarded a research grant from the Stiftung Mercator foundation in 2015. 
  • The 2015 PhD Prize of the Medical Faculty Essen was granted to Dr. Gregor Zaun and Dr. Yasmin Zaun (AG Prof. Wennemuth).
  • Johannes van den Boom, UDE Department of Molecular Biology I, was awarded an EMBO Short-Term Fellowship Grant for a period of research at the Rockefeller University, New York.
  • The Abstract Achievement Award of the American Society of Hematology 2015 was granted to Dr. F. Alashkar and Dr. C. Khandanpour (UK Essen, Department of Hematology).
  • Julia Severmann was awarded the “Poster Award 2015” during the 8th International Meeting of the Stem Cell Network NRW and the “1st Oral Presentation Award” during the echo Congress 2015.
  • Sebastian Hönes MSc (UK Essen, Clinic for Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases) was selected for a “Highlighted Oral Presentation” to the 15th International Pituitary Congress 2015 in Orlando (Florida, USA) and received travel grants from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Endokrinologie (DGE) and the European Thyroid Association (ETA).
  • The master’s theses of Cecilia Vallet (MA, 2014) and Laura Barnes (MA, 2015) (both from Prof. Shirley Knauer’s group, ZMB) were chosen for publication in the Springer Best Master Series in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
  • TheAbstract Achievement Award of the American Society of Hematology 2014 was granted to J. Hönes and L. Michel (UK Essen, Department of Hematology).
  • Falko Heinemann, Institute for Transfusion Medicine, won the Best Poster Award at the 2014 conference of EFI (European Federation for Immunogenetics) “From Genes to Therapy” in Stockholm.
