Goals and Structure

As a cross-disciplinary research platform Urban Systems is concerned not only with exploring the built environment and its technical infrastructure but also with analysing and describing the political and social, cultural, economic and ecological realities, conditions, problems and consequences of urban life. Only this way is it possible to identify the indicators of the quality of life for the urban population on the most diverse levels and to use them in shaping sustainable urban development strategies. The many disciplines involved in this process make the Main Research Area one of the broadest-based research facilities of its kind in the world.

The Main Research Area Urban Systems offers a forum for research and teaching  for UDE members and uniquely incorporates other academic, economic, social and political stakeholders. Together its members conduct integrative research that progressively leads to new findings and encourages a constant exchange between different disciplines, in the knowledge that this kind of cooperation (particularly in less well-established constellations) is often the main source of new insights. The Main Research Area thus makes a visible and significant contribution to inter- and transdisciplinary urban systems research.
Central to the work of the Main Research Area in both structure and content are two of the UDE’s central scientific research facilities, the Centre for Logistics and Traffic (ZLV) and the Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU).
