  • The University of Würzburg’s August Homburger Prize was awarded to Dr. Anke Hinney in 2011 for outstanding work and research in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy.
  • Computational life scientists Dr. Dominik Heider and Dr. Nikolaj Dybowski received the “Selected Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” distinction for their research project on computer-assisted HIV determination in 2011.
  • The Rudolf Schülke Foundation Hygiene Prize 2011 was awarded to, among others, Dr. Jörg Steinmann of the Institute for Medical Microbiology for stability experiments aimed at improving estimation of the transfer risk of hepatitis C infection and definition of reliable preventive measures.
  • Prof. Dr. Erich Gulbins was admitted as a member of the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences in 2011. He also received an adjunct professorship for three years for (experimental) surgery at the University of Cincinnati.
  • Prof. Dr. Shirley Knauer received the 2011 Foundation Prize from the Stiftung Tumorforschung Kopf-Hals (Head/Neck Tumour Research Foundation) for the molecular significance of survivin in tumour-stroma interaction in head and neck cancer.
  • Dr. Stefan Kasper of the Clinic for Internal Medicine (Tumour Research) received the Wiedenfeld Prize of the Stiftung Krebsforschung Duisburg in 2011 for identification and molecular characterization of resistance factors for antibody therapies for colorectal cancer.
  • Dr. Anja Matena and Dipl.-Chem. Paulina Kaempfe won the fifth Nano Entrepreneurship Academy (NEnA) prize in 2011 with their idea of “COVERsolutions”.
  • Prof. Dr. Markus Kaiser received an ERC Starting Grant in 2010 and the Junior Researcher Award of the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn Foundation in 2011.
  • Prof. Dr. Dirk Schadendorf received the German Cancer Prize in 2010 in the clinical section for his academic originality and the quality of his current and pioneering work in the field of oncology. He studies malignant melanomas (black skin cancer).
  • Prof. Dr. Astrid Westendorf received the Graduate Scholarship of the Novartis Foundation for Therapeutic Research in 2010.
