The key areas of research briefly outlined here are not to be seen as permanently established and discrete fields of research, but rather are pragmatically organised and changeable with regard to the scope of their activities. Consequently, the most compelling research questions, and hence the most productive research approaches, often occur at the points of intersection between these different fields. At the same time, the research areas are not (yet) represented equally within the Main Research Area, since it originally grew out of the Center for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) and the Center for Logistics and Traffic (ZLV); the fields of Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics are therefore more heavily weighted (in terms of researchers involved) than Health, Culture, and Society, Education and Social Policy, which have only joined the Main Research Area over the past two years.
