Urban Systems

In addition to conducting extensive research on issues related to urban systems, the Main Research Area is also making great efforts to expand academic instruction, which will lead to the introduction of wide-ranging and self-contained academic course offerings for students and young academics at all degree levels (Bachelor, Master, Doctoral and Postdoctoral programmes). The first major step towards establishing these academic programmes has been taken with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Dieter Hassenpflug (Urban Sociologist from Weimar) as Visiting Professor for the winter semester 2009/10. He is currently working with the University of Duisburg-Essen to establish a structured doctoral programme in Urban Systems.
The University of Duisburg-Essen already boasts a variety of interdisciplinary Master programmes in water, logistics, and traffic-related subjects that is unparalleled in Germany. These programmes are closely connected to the research programmes of the Center for Water and Environmental Research and the Center for Logistics and Traffic and are partly supported by these centres in institutional and organisational terms.
