Many factors combine to make the Faculty of Mathematics one of the Universityof Duisburg-Essens strong scientific research institutions: its size and the rangeof research fields represented within it, its links with other departments at theuniversity, an excellent international reputation and the worldwide contacts of its members, the comprehensive range of core curriculum courses in Bachelor / Master and Teaching programmes, and a model infrastructure to promote young scientists (International Graduate School of Mathematics). Particular importance is attached to the facultys close ties with the Institute for Experimental Mathematics (IEM), where theoretical, algorithmic and application-oriented research fields of algebra, number theory and discrete mathematics complement corresponding areas of the faculty. The mathematicians working at the IEM are members of the Faculty of Mathematics, where they also teach.
