Over the years, German as a Second / Foreign Language has become best known for closely linking theory and practice, and for offeringresearch and teaching that are designed forsustainability and continuity. The focus is particularly on support and development programmes for children and adolescents with a migrant background, and on international cooperation projects with universities in Afghanistan, Ukraine and Russia.
The department’s supplementary teaching programme for children from a migrant background has been in existence for over thirty years. The project serves as a model for 35 similar projects initiated by the Mercator Foundationin Germany in past years. One particular investigative focus is on the link between content learning and language learning.
